About Us

Sigaram Montessori

Sigaram is a Montessori school for children between the age group of 1.6 to 6 years. We are located at Kottivakkam, Chennai.

Established in 2017 by an IMTC certified Montessorian, Sigaram ensures each child experiences an authentic Montessori schooling, complete with all necessary activities that a child needs, in an environment that empowers and supports them.

Sigaram seeks to provide a loving, caring and stimulating environment in which children may learn, grow and develop under the guidance of caring teachers and their peers, following the Montessori philosophy and method.

“Education is a natural process carried out by the child and is not acquired by listening to words, but the experiences in the environment”
– Dr. Maria Montessori

Montessori Methods

Practical Life

Practical Life activities prepare a child to be a productive, effective, and well-functioning person in our world. The work is holistic in developing the child’s “whole self” by honing fine motor skills, the grace of movement, self-regulation, concentration, behaving with respect and with good manners, independence, and self-esteem.

For example, these activities indirectly prepare the child for reading and writing. Through Practical Life Activities, the child hones hand-eye coordination and muscle control and executes the tasks left to right and top to bottom preparing him for writing and reading.

Some practical life activities are spooning, buttoning, watering plants, shoe lace tying, sewing etc.

Sensorial Activities

The sensorial area in a Montessori classroom focuses on lessons and activities that help develop the five senses: seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, and smelling. The lessons and activities provided in the sensorial area of the classroom help children clarify, classify, and understand the world around them.

The sensorial materials are designed with built-in feedback to control errors aimed to show when a mistake has been made. Children are encouraged to be independent of oversight which develops their self-confidence and incentive to practice and improve. A child’s sense perceptions will become structured and capable of comprehending abstract concepts through experiencing the sensorial lessons. The sensorial area is divided into six categories: size, form, color, tactile, gustatory, olfactory, and auditory.

Language

Reading and conversation are a significant aspect of the Montessori system. The natural progression of written expression and reading is encouraged by enforcing the link between sound and symbol – children effortlessly identify the sound while tracing sandpaper letters with their fingers.

Arithmetic

Arithmetic, deals with expressions such as shapes, space, numbers (1-10) and their relationship and progresses towards larger quantities and abstract. The materials are so beautifully designed and appropriate for each child during his/her sensitive periods of learning math.

Cultural Studies

Geography, Botany, Zoology, Art, and Music are presented as extensions of language learning activities and are integrated into the child’s environment. Children learn about people and cultures from all over the world and develop an attitude of respect and admiration.

NRI Program

This is an exclusive program offered at Sigaram, designed with flexibility to help children of parents from outside the country who come and stay in India for a short span. We care and keep these children engaged by involving them in various activities following the Montessori Method. We also educate these children on Indian culture & traditions.
